Meet Shane — Founder of Beginner HIIT Pilates

From Rock Bottom to Peak Performance — And Back to the Basics

In 2012, I made a decision that changed everything. I walked away from a lifestyle that wasn’t serving me and committed to becoming the person I knew I could be — someone my kids could look up to; someone I could see with pride in the mirror.

I focused intensely on my physical and mental wellbeing. I started eating better, really examining what I was putting into my body and even on my body — avoiding toxic ingredients wherever possible. I worked on building not just physical strength but also my cardiovascular endurance. I started competing in multi-discipline adventure races, went on multi-day whitewater canoe trips - biking and running regularly. I was in the best shape of my life.

Then in 2020, metastatic cancer spread throughout my body. I was faced with life-altering surgeries. During nine weeks of chemotherapy, I was dealing with not just a global pandemic but a life-changing cancer diagnosis with treatment that essentially wiped out my immune system when I needed it the most. But I learned something critical during that time: you don’t train to avoid getting sick — you train to be strong enough to get through it.

I believe the treatments, coupled with my positive focus and healthy lifestyle, boosted my immune system to heal my body. I made a full recovery without those surgeries.

Four months after my last chemo session, I could barely jog. My adventure racing teammates would run loops while I struggled to keep up. But I kept showing up. I focused on the science, the fundamentals, and incremental progress. That fall, I completed a 30-hour adventure race. Later, a 5-day race through the Appalachian Mountains.

Here’s what I discovered: most people are far closer to transformation than they realize.

They see extreme results and think they require extreme effort. The truth? It’s the basics done right: sleep, hydration, proper nutrition, consistent movement, and the mental reframing that turns obstacles into armor.

I’m a certified HIIT instructor with over 500 hours of HIIT training in Toronto, and I’m currently working toward my Personal Training Specialist certification. But more importantly, I’ve lived what I teach. I’ve helped a colleague go from gym-intimidated to completing her first 5K. I’ve helped a friend use fitness to manage mental health challenges. I’ve shown my own kids what’s possible when you refuse to quit on yourself.

I created Beginner HIIT Pilates for people who want to feel better but may not have access to — or desire for — traditional gyms. Whether you’re just starting out, getting back into fitness after a long break, dealing with physical limitations, or simply prefer the privacy of home, this class is built for you.

My approach grounds high-intensity training in Pilates principles: core engagement, controlled movement, proper alignment. You get your heart rate up and build real strength while learning to move well. It’s challenging, but never reckless. Safe, but never soft.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up.

I teach you to reframe the voice in your head that says “I can’t.” I help you understand that struggling doesn’t mean you’re weak — it means you’re capable of more than you think, and your grit is your strength. I guide you through the science-based fundamentals that actually work, without the noise and complexity.

The difference between staying stuck and breaking through isn’t talent or genetics — it’s showing up, being consistent, and trusting the process.

I’m here to show you that you already have everything you need.

You’re closer than you think.

What I Believe

Fitness should feel good — not just physically, but mentally. It should be something you look forward to, not dread. That's why every class is built around encouragement, not pressure. You'll never hear me shout "no pain, no gain." What you will hear is "you're doing great, and here's how to make it work for your body."

I don't care where you're starting from. I care that you started.
